Waukee Street Department

The Waukee Streets Department is an integral part of the Public Works Department. The many responsibilities of the department include:
 Maintenance of city roads and streets. Seal cracks and repair by using concreted and/or asphalt. Maintain gravel roads and shoulders by grading, adding rock, conducting edge rut spreading
 Repair and replace curb, gutter, sidewalk and sidewalk including the building and setting of forms, pouring concrete and finishing; repair of potholes, manholes, storm sewers, and catch basins
 Install and maintain road signs in accordance with Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
 Removes snow as well as sanding/salting of streets and sidewalks during the winter months.
 Sweep streets during spring and summer months.
 Raise and lower storm sewer covers, inspect and repair and install storm sewer inlets, culverts and ditches. Mows and sprays road shoulders, ditches and right-of-way to control weed and vegetation

Prohibited Parking During Snow Emergency:

No person shall park, abandon or leave unattended any vehicle on any public street, alley or city-owned off-street parking area during any snow emergency proclaimed by the chief of police or his designee unless the snow has been removed or plowed from said street, alley or parking area and the snow has ceased to fall. A snow emergency parking ban shall continue from its proclamation through the duration of the snow or ice storm and the forty-eight (48) hour period after cessation of such storm except as above provided upon streets which have been fully opened.

Removal of snow, ice and accumulations from the sidewalks:

A. Duty of Property Owner. It is the responsibility of the abutting property owner to remove snow, ice and accumulations from the sidewalks within 24 hours after the cessation of the weather event or other cause of the accumulation.
B. Failure of Property Owner. Any owner who shall, for a period of 24 hours after the cessation of the storm or cause of accumulation, permit snow, ice or accumulation to remain upon the adjoining and abutting sidewalks, is guilty of a municipal infraction punishable by civil penalty of $50.00 for the first offense; $100 for the second offense; and not more than $750 for each subsequent offense. A penalty will not be assessed until 12 hours after the City of Waukee shall have given a warning to the party responsible to remove such accumulation.
C. Added Safety Measures. When ice has so formed upon any sidewalk that it cannot be removed, the owner, occupant or person in charge of abutting property shall keep such ice sprinkled with salt, ashes, sawdust or sand in such manner as to prevent such sidewalk from being dangerous to persons using the same.
D. Dumping of Snow. It is unlawful for any persons to remove snow, ice and accumulations from private premises and to deposit the same upon any public highway, street, avenue, alley, sidewalk, public square and commons within the City.
E. Removal by City; Assessing Costs. Should snow, ice, or accumulations be permitted to remain upon any sidewalk for a period of ten (10) daylight hours after the cessation of the storm or cause of accumulation, after affording reasonable notice, the city manager may, in his discretion, cause the same to be removed and the actual cost of the removal assessed against the property in accordance with Iowa Law.

Winter Garbage Container Placement

When placing your garbage containers out for your weekly pick-up, please leave the container in your driveway and out of the street.  Containers that are left in the street are subject to either being hit with a snowplow or forcing your snow plow driver to leave their plow to remove the container from their path.  It would be greatly appreciated by your snow plow driver to keep all garbage containers out of the streets during and immediately following any snow event.  Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Placement of Mailboxes

This notice is provided to you by the United States Postal Service and the City of Waukee.  Failure to follow these instructions may result in the stoppage of mail delivery to your home.

Failure to follow these guidelines may also result in damage or destruction of your mailbox by city equipment - especially snowplows.  The city will assume no liability for damage done to improperly set mailboxes.

1. Bottom of mailbox must be 43" above street level.
2. It is desired that the post be located 24" back from the curb.  However, the front of the mailbox must be even with the curb as shown in the diagram.
3. House numbers must be placed and maintained on the door of the mailbox.
4. Mailboxes must be located in proper numerical sequence on the side of the street served by the carrier.
5. Mailboxes should be grouped where possible.
6. Postal customers must have a complete address on their mail, including house number and street.  Customers receiving mail not properly addressed should send address corrections as soon as possible.  This will enable the carrier to provide more efficient service.  Forms are available from the carrier or at the Post Office.
7. It is the customer's responsibility to remove the snow so the carrier may serve the box without leaving his/her vehicle.
8. Customers must raise the signal flag when letters are placed in the mailbox for the carrier to pick-up.
