GENERAL SUMMARY
Under the general direction of the Director of Public Works, serves as
the City’s representative on project sites for the inspection of
water, storm sewers, sanitary sewers, paving, sidewalks and other public
and private improvements. Work requires independent judgment and initiative
in developing solutions to problems, interpreting general policies, and
proceeding with projects to completion with minimum supervision. Assists
in the management and administration of Capital Improvement Projects.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The following duties are normal for this position.
These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other
duties may be required and assigned.
- Inspects private development (subdivision) construction within
the City.
- Inspects ACC & PCC paving projects, including testing of materials
for air entrapment, slump and collecting samples for compliance tests.
Checks for proper placement of reinforcement steel check forms for
elevation and location.
- Observes sub grade preparation for paving, including compaction
activities, cutting/filling to plan elevation and observation of
testing using preferred method for checking soil densities.
- Inspects sanitary projects, including checks for line & grade,
materials quality, proper bedding and backfill procedures and pipe
connections. Observes air test, manhole (deflection) test and manhole
leakage test. Performs weir infiltration test of truck lines.
- Inspects storm sewer projects, including pipe and structures such
as intakes, manholes and box culverts. Checks for line and grade,
jointing of pipe, material quality, steel placement and forms used
for structures. Tests concrete if using PCC poured on site (air test
and slump).
- Inspects water projects, including material quality, proper bedding,
backfill procedures, pipe connections, proper fire hydrant installation
and service connections.
- Relates to general public, contractors, consulting engineers and
their staff as well as other government agencies on a daily basis.
Records ongoing and proposed projects.
- Maintains a daily record of all inspections including time, type
of work inspected and on which project.
- Prepares and files “as built” plans for maintenance
of permanent record.
- Reviews plans submitted by consulting engineers and utilities to
ensure conformance with established requirements.
- Creates and reviews intermediate and final pay estimates quantities
for projects.
- Prepares and reviews punch lists for final acceptance of projects
or occupancy permits.
- Reviews all storm water pollution prevention plans and inspects
on a regular basis all construction areas within the City for erosion
control.
- Operates City vehicle to and from and around sites to perform City
duties.
- Operates computer utilizing word processing and spreadsheets.
- Provides oversight/direction to contract employees and Public Works
staff.
- Aids in snow removal.
- Performs surveying duties as assigned.
- Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
