Here we’ll answer some of the questions that we hear most often. If you would like additional information, please contact City Hall:
Q: Where can I find information about city services?
A: We’re happy to help you get all the information you need. If you can’t locate the answers in our Web site, please call City Hall at (515) 987-4522.
Q: Can I register my car in Waukee?
A: Your car must be registered through the Dallas County Treasurer’s Office at the county courthouse in Adel. For more information call the treasurer’s office at 515-993-5812.
Q: When is trash pickup?
A: Trash pickup is on Wednesdays, Thursdays or Fridays, depending on the area of the city in which you live. Yard waste should not be included in household trash.
Q: Does Waukee have a recycling program?
A: Yes. Recycling is done in the city. If you are a regular garbage customer, contact City Hall Utility Billing Office at 978-5502 to inquire about a recycling toter. If you are in the mobile home park, have a condo or townhome, they use a private hauler and you will need to contact them.
Q: When can I have yard waste picked up?
A: Yard waste pickup is on Mondays from the first of April to the end of November. You must have your yard waste in a bundle, can or biodegradable sack. Stickers are no longer required for yard waste pickup.
Q: Can I burn yard waste?
A: No. Waukee has a ban on open burning. If you wish to burn, you may apply for a variance at the fire department. The non-emergency number is 515-987-4712.
Q: Do I need to license my pet?
A: Yes, Waukee does require pet licenses. Please bring proof of rabies vaccination to the Police Station and we will be glade to issue you a license. The cost is $5 per animal. If your pet has been spayed or neutered, cost is only $2.50 per animal.
Q: I have a concern that I would like to bring up to the mayor and city council. How do I do so?
A: There is an open forum toward the beginning of every regular city council meeting during which anyone may speak regarding any subject that is not on that night's agenda for consideration. If you are uncomfortable speaking before the council, you may also write a letter outlining your concerns and mail it to: Mayor and Council Members, City of Waukee, 230 W. Hickman Rd., Waukee, IA 50263. Be certain to include your name, address and phone number. Anonymous complaints or concerns will not be forwarded to the mayor and council and therefore cannot be resolved.
Q: What should I do if I suspect a gas leak?
A: First, leave the building immediately. Then call Public Works at 987-4363 between 7:00AM and 3:30PM, Monday-Friday, or on the 24-hour on-call phone at 249-1212, DO NOT use the land line phone, cell phone, or turn any appliances or light switches off or on inside the building. These devices can cause a spark which could ignite the gas.
Q: How do I locate my property lines?
A: When a property is platted, steel rods, or “property pins” are placed at the corners of the property lines. These pins will be slightly buried and sometimes covered with a plastic cap. In order to find your property lines, you must find the property pins. If you cannot find your property pins, you may need to have your property surveyed by an independent company at your cost. The City does not locate property pins or property lines. The City can, however, provide plat maps and lot dimensions for your property. Call the Development Services Department at 515-978-9533 for more information.
Q: Where do I go with questions about my property taxes?
A: Contact the Dallas County Assessor at 515-993-5802, or the Dallas County Treasurer at 515-993-5808.
