Water Meter Hook-up Fees

The cost for the residential water meter/hook-up fees is $298.00, which is paid with the building permit. The commercial water meter hook-up fee is based on the size of the meter and materials needed when the meter is set and is billed out separately from the building permit.

Meters are read the 3rd week of the month.  For more information on Utility Billing.

Irrigation Meters

There are two different types of irrigation meters that can be purchased:

1. Portable irrigation meter - The portable irrigation meter can be purchased in the Utility Office, 230 W. Hickman Road, for $80.00. This meter is connected to your outside faucet with a recommended vacuum breaker which is a small piece that fits on the end of the faucet to ensure there is no back flow. The vacuum breaker can be purchased at any local hardware store.
2. In House permanent irrigation meter - The plumbing for the permanent irrigation meter will need to be completed by a licensed plumber prior to setting the meter. The required plumbing should be set up as an "add-on" system with the meter coming into the home and splitting out to a "T" with one direction for the indoor plumbing and one direction for the outdoor plumbing.  Click here for Water Meter & Irrigation Meter Detail
3. Backflow Preventor - A backflow preventer is required on all permanent irrigation systems. The backflow preventer keeps water from backing through the water system into your drinking water from your irrigation system. This must be inspected annually by a licensed professional.  Backflow Preventor Test Form

Hydrant Flushing & Valve Turning Program

The City of Waukee Water Department will flush fire hydrants annually beginning in spring through the fall. The hydrants will get flushed once every 3 years rotating areas to cover a third of the City each year. The water will run from 1 to 3 minutes to ensure the quality of the water in the distribution system and to collect information on the amount of pressure and flow in each hydrant. At the same time the hydrants are flushed, the Waukee Water Department will also exercise the valves to make sure they are working correctly in the event of an emergency. If you have any questions regarding this program, you may contact the Waukee Public Works Department.

Following a hydrant flushing in your neighborhood, you may notice some discoloration in your water. Turn on your faucet and run your water for several minutes until the water runs clear. If the problem persists, contact the Waukee Water Department at 987-4363.

HYDRANT FLUSHING BEGINS MAY 1, 2011

The City of Waukee Water Department will begin the annual fire hydrant flushing program on May 1st and will continue through the 15th of June.  The program consists of cleaning water mains through a network of flushing sequences with the water being discharged from the largest port on the fire hydrant.  It involves closing valves in a specific sequence to create water movement in one direction with opening specific hydrants at the end of each sequence.  The importance of the flushing program is to ensure the greatest quality of water throughout the entire system.  This technique allows higher water flow velocities to produce better scouring of Pipes.  This process will dislodge and remove mineral deposits that have accumulated in the water mains.

The benefits include maintaining and improving the water quality level in the water mains.  The flushing program will also reduce bacteriological growth, restore disinfection residuals, improve color and turbidity, control corrosion and will help restore fire flows and pressure in the distribution system.

Discoloration in the water may appear.  We urge all water users to check their cold water for discoloration prior to drawing water for cooking and for use in automatic washers and dishwashers.  If discoloration is found, the water user is advised to discontinue use until the water is clear.  This can be accomplished by letting your cold water run until the water clears up.  Discolored water is not harmful to your health.

The flushing will take place during the hours of 7:00 am to 3:30 pm on weekdays.  There might be a slight drop in pressure.  Otherwise service should not be affected by the flushing program.  We urge resident to use caution with traveling around the Water Department Personnel.

If you have any questions about the Flushing Program please contact the Public Works Department at 987-4363.
