Travel and Safety Assistance Needed

traffic (1)

As more families choose parent/guardian drop-off and pick-up for their students at Waukee schools this year, the Waukee Police Department is encouraging drivers to make safety a top priority. The department acknowledges that winter weather conditions add to traffic concerns as well. Please take into account the following traffic considerations to help ensure safety around schools:

  • Stopping in the travel portion of the road is illegal. (321.354 Stopping on Traveled Way)
  • Vehicles are not to pass opposing traffic during dangerous circumstances. (321.304 Prohibited Passing)
  • Parents/guardians, please do not let your children out on the travel portion of the road.
  • Drivers, please be courteous and respectful of other vehicles and pedestrians. Slow down.
  • There are currently no traffic measures in place to help busses and personal vehicles merge back on to SE L.A. Grant Pkwy from Timberline. (This is currently being discussed.)
  • The PD acknowledges that traffic has greatly increased and traffic at times is backed up to Alice’s Road.
  • Drivers need to be aware of no stopping on the travel portion of SE University Ave. (321.354 Stopping on Traveled Way)
  • Please follow the school’s drop-off and pick-up plan, and understand that if you cannot use those routes, stopping on SE University Ave. is not a legal and or a safe option.

Solutions:

  • Park in the school parking lot and wait for your child to come out.
  • Delay picking up by 5-10 minutes to avoid the main congestion. Students may wait inside the building.
  • Please consider alternating to reduce some of the risky decisions drivers are making to get back onto the road.

The Waukee Police Department is dedicated to Waukee residents, Waukee Community School District students and parents’ safety and well-being at all times. Please help officers keep everyone safe. Police officers will be visible and will be enforcing traffic laws, with the possibility of tickets being issued.

Thank you for your understanding of this very critical part of local children’s safety!
