The Waukee Police Department is advising residents to lock up their bicycles after a recent series of thefts of unlocked bicycles from yards and open garages. The department has received several reports of bicycles stolen in the last several weeks.
Here are a few tips to avoid being a victim of bike theft:
1. Make sure your garage is locked, especially at night and/or if you are not home. Lock vehicles as well.
2. Keep your garage windows covered. A thief will often look through the windows to see if anything inside is worth stealing.
3. Make sure your yard is well lit. If there are dark places to hide near the garage, burglars may be drawn to your property. Lights with motion detectors also discourage thieves.
4. Always be aware and report any suspicious persons or activities in your neighborhood to the Waukee Police Department at 515-222-3321.
