New population data released by the U.S. Census Bureau estimates Waukee’s population on July 1, 2017 was 20,649 residents. Between 2016 and 2017, the City of Waukee’s population increased by nine percent. This is the highest percentage of growth by any Des Moines metro area city within that 12-month span.

“We know we are growing; we work daily to strategically plan for that growth. But, I’m still a little shocked every time the Census releases new Waukee data,” said Waukee Mayor Bill Peard. “I began my first term as Waukee Mayor in 2006 and shortly after that the official population count was barely 12,000. It’s been an incredible journey from 12,000 to 20,000.”

The nine percent growth totaled 1,704 new Waukee residents. During that same time frame (July 2016-June 2017), 1,082 building permits were issued by the City’s Development Services Department for a total of $213 million. Holmes Murphy opened its doors at its new location in Waukee’s Kettlestone development earlier this year. Apple is expected to break ground on its new data center late this year. And, Fridley Theatres’ new IMAX location in Waukee is on track for a November 2018 opening.

“This new data shows that Waukee grows by more than four people per day. We often hear that people choose our community because it has access to a wide array of amenities but still maintains its hometown feel,” said Waukee Development Services Director Brad Deets. “We are wrapping up our ‘Imagine Waukee 2040’ comprehensive planning process right now, and that will guide us through continuing to deliver that quality of life Waukee residents expect.”

The City projects that the Waukee population could reach 40,000 by 2030.
