The Waukee Police Department will be conducting its May Targeted Traffic Enforcement Project (TTEP) on Friday, May 24 from 2:30-5:30 p.m. This special enforcement initiative will focus on distracted driving, with all violations enforced.
Distracted driving is any activity that diverts attention from driving, including talking or texting on your phone, eating and drinking, talking to people in your vehicle, fiddling with the stereo, entertainment or navigation system—anything that takes your attention away from the task of safe driving. You cannot drive safely unless the task of driving has your full attention. Any non-driving activity you engage in is a potential distraction and increases your risk of crashing.
According to an Iowa DOT report, there were 1,090 crashes in 2018 in Iowa caused by drivers distracted by the use of a phone or other device. Eight fatalities resulted from those crashes. There were 32 major injuries and 143 minor injuries reported.
