The new one-cent local option sales tax passed in Dallas County in November 2017. New sales tax dollars are enabling the City of Waukee to build new parks and improve existing parks in Waukee without raising the property tax levy. And, the Waukee Betterment Foundation is also teaming up with the City to bring exciting new accessible amenities to the public.
The Trailside Dog Park opened to a crowd of about 80 dogs on April 5. The four-acre site is located at 590 SE Brick Drive next to the Heart of the Warrior Trail. The park features separated large/small dog areas, a drinking fountain, dog waste stations, a shade structure, concrete walking paths, open greenspaces, public restrooms and parking. It also features a trail connection and bicycle racks. It is open to Waukee residents and non-residents who secure park passes.
Fox Creek Park Phase 2 improvements were completed this summer, including Waukee’s first splash pad. Other new additions to the park include a tennis court and four Pickleball courts. The park has a new indoor shelter building with an 80-person capacity, now available for event rentals year-round. Fox Creek Park’s new non-traditional play area features a climbing wall and spinning ball, as well as unique “in-hill” slides and a tunnel system.
Westown Meadows Park is a new neighborhood park which is currently wrapping up construction at 2445 SE Willowbrook Drive. It will be open to the public later this month. The park features a playground, paved walking paths, landscaping, parking and a restroom/storage room building. This modern park project also includes shaded picnic table areas and a water play feature during warm months.
Waukee’s future Community Park & Youth Sports Complex (name TBD) is in the planning and early construction phases. It will feature 12 ball fields, concession stands, playgrounds, a 12-acre lake, trails, indoor restrooms and more. This destination will connect local and regional visitors with sports and nature! Located east of 10th Street and north of Hickman Road, the park and Phase 1 of the complex (eight fields) will be completed in spring 2022. The Waukee Betterment Foundation is raising $3 million to build the Greater Iowa Credit Union Miracle League® Field, an all-inclusive play area and an accessible fishing pier at the site.
