New U.S. Census Bureau data released May 22, 2014, shows Waukee remains the fastest-growing city in Iowa. The Census Bureau report is based on population estimates from July 2013, with the population at 17,077. Waukee grew by 22.22% since the last Census Bureau data from April 2010, leading growth within the state.
The City of Waukee has been proactive in preparing for this growth and is poised to continue that carefully-planned evolution.
“Waukee is primed for the future,” said Waukee Mayor Bill Peard. “Waukee is a pretty special place. We are offering a lot of opportunities for additional people to come live in, do business with and visit our city.”
Waukee recently introduced plans for Kettlestone, a new 1,500-acre mixed-use development that will include an outdoor town center in a walkable environment with a variety of housing choices, retail space, green space, trails and a community event space. The City of Waukee is partnering with current property owners in the development area to make Kettlestone a reality.
Kettlestone isn’t the only area of Waukee readied for growth. Expansion continues along Alice’s Road from University Avenue north to Hickman Road, and the Hickman Road Corridor is evolving with new businesses, a future elementary school and housing developments.
Over the past five years, the City of Waukee has significantly increased its business investment in the Hickman Road Corridor. New housing taking off in the area includes multi-family and single family housing, along with townhomes. The City’s Development Services department says permits are up 40% and valuations are up almost 200% for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2014, from the prior fiscal year.
“Careful planning and a thoughtful, comprehensive approach to development have put Waukee in a position for great success,” Peard said. “Our citizens and city councils have worked together to create a dynamic community and I am excited to see what the future brings.”
